Abstract: The type II TGF-beta receptor is a serine/threonine kinase whose expression is essential for the action of TGF-beta. In this paper, we describe the cloning and expression of the human type II TGF-beta promoter. DNA sequence analysis indicates that the region near the transcription initiation site lacks a TATA and CAAT box but contains Sp l binding sites. A similar promoter type has been identified in the 5' flanking regions of genes that code for certain other growth factor receptors. Transfection of the promoter (888 bp fragment) mediated transcriptional activity in bovine vascular smooth muscle cells and human lung fibroblasts. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
